Serious about Sustainability

We honor our history as we focus on our future. We use financial, natural and human resources wisely without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Greif and Soterra for Sustainable Forestry Management

Soterra is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Greif, Inc., a global leader in industrial packaging with factories and offices in more than 50 countries. We use intensive regeneration techniques to maintain an ongoing timber supply while protecting the land from erosion. We are active in the conservation of our property by following forestry best management practices.

Greif is an active and involved member of both the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). Soterra supports Greif’s commitment as a CGI member to manage its lands to improve pollinator habitat on and benefit the health and sustainability of local eco-systems.

As part of that commitment, Soterra is engaged in a multi-year study with Pollinator Partnership and NAPPC, the world’s foremost experts on pollination issues, that seeks to generate the research necessary to support the development of infrastructure that improves and promotes pollinator-friendly habitat and results in improved plant reproduction and food production. As a result of such efforts, Greif was recognized at the 2012 CGI Annual Meeting for its commitment to the “Pollinator Habitat Improvement” project.

Soterra is also in the final stages of receiving the approval of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement a wetlands mitigation bank in Hancock County, Mississippi. This area will be converted to a wetlands pine savannah and serve to preserve vital wetland habitat in the gulf coast region of Mississippi.
